Freegaia \u2013 The City Begins to Shine \u00b7 Episode 1 \u00b7 Part 1 of 23<\/em><\/p>

What good things have you done for the common good in the past few weeks?<\/strong><\/p>

Alice looked at the question for a while. Then she said, \u201enothing<\/em>\u201c thought and \u201eI was there for my children<\/em>\u201c she typed, because she couldn't think of anything else.<\/p>

\"\"<\/p>

When Bob walks into the kitchen, it\u2019s just before midnight, and Alice is crying. She\u2019s sitting at the table, with a plate of the children\u2019s leftover pasta in front of her\u2014the meal she\u2019d tried to get them to eat while standing\u2014and her cell phone is glowing in her hand.<\/p>

Bob stops in the doorway. He's known Alice for half a year and has never seen her cry. He sees her cell phone. He sees that she's looking at her cell phone and not at him. And he has a hunch\u2014one he doesn't like.<\/p>

\u201eWho's writing to you?\u201c<\/p>

Alice laughs. \u201eNo one you know.\u201c<\/p>

That was the answer he didn't want to hear. He sits down next to her and holds out his hand.<\/p>

She hands him the cell phone.<\/p>

\"\"<\/p>

On the screen, behind a gold check mark, is Alice's own sentence: I was there for my children.<\/em> Below is a message. It begins with Dear Alice, welcome!<\/em>, and it's short:<\/p>

The community thanks you\u2014for the time you give to your children.<\/em>
Your first 100 Gradido are a token of appreciation for what you've already done.<\/em>
It's great to have you here.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>

Below that, in smaller print, is the name of the person who confirmed it: The software confirmed this initial thank-you right away so you can get started immediately. From now on, a real person will be reading everything you enter.<\/em> And at the very bottom, a number followed by three letters that he doesn't recognize: 100.00 GDD<\/strong>.<\/p>

He reads the message twice. There\u2019s nothing bad in it. That\u2019s the thing. It says that the community thanks her for the time she\u2019s giving to Helena and Gustav. It says who confirmed it. And then there\u2019s a number.<\/p>

\u201eA piece of software,\u201c says Bob.<\/p>

\u201eIt says so right there.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eYou cried over a piece of software.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eI cried because it\u2019s true.\u201c Alice wipes her face with her sleeve. \u201eRead it again. It\u2019s true.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eHow much does that cost?\u201c Bob asks.<\/p>

\u201eNothing.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eHow much does it really cost?\u201c<\/p>

\u201eNothing, Bob. I read it. Twice.\u201c<\/p>

He's scrolling. Why a hundred?<\/em>, it says, and below that, it says that from now on there will be some every month\u2014up to a thousand\u2014for good deeds done for the common good.<\/p>

\u201eA thousand a month,\u201c says Bob. \u201eThere\u2019s a catch.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eThen find him.\u201c<\/p>

He looks for the fine print, and he finds it: the privacy policy, right at the bottom, and he reads it while Alice watches him. Then the sign-up page. The lines change there, and he remembers one\u2014three words: Community-driven. Decentralized. Open source.<\/em> He doesn't believe any of them. But the third one can be verified.<\/p>

\u201eDid you sign up there? With your real name?\u201c<\/p>

\u201eWith my real name.\u201c Alice doesn\u2019t take the cell phone away from him. \u201eI heard about it somewhere\u2014I don\u2019t remember where. That single mothers are valued. And then it asked me what good I\u2019d done, and I thought: nothing. I worked, I put the kids to bed, I went to the social services office.\u201c She points to the refrigerator, where the duty roster hangs, with Helena\u2019s crayon-drawn sun above it. \u201eThat\u2019s all I do. And then I wrote it down. Just as it is.\u201c<\/p>

Bob looks at the sentence with the gold checkmark. Six words.<\/p>

\u201eAnd a piece of software answers you.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eThe first time. So it goes quickly and you don\u2019t have to wait.\u201c Alice taps the short line. \u201eNext time, people will read along\u2014hosts, both male and female. And they\u2019ll write that being a mother is a service to the common good. One of the most important ones.\u201c She exhales. \u201eIt\u2019s been eight years since anyone first told me that.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eA piece of software told you that.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eSomeone taught the software to do it.\u201c<\/p>

Bob places the cell phone on the table, screen up, so that the message is between them.<\/p>

\u201eI want to know who that is,\u201c he says. \u201eWho they are. What they want.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eI know what they want,\u201c says Alice. \u201eI want to show it to Carla.\u201c<\/p>

\u201eShow it to me first.\u201c<\/p>

Here's how it works in the software<\/h2>

The question Alice reads at midnight is the same one your Gradido account asks you when you open it for the first time.<\/p>

  1. Open an account.<\/strong> Go to gdd.gradido.net<\/a> and log in. Don't have an account yet? Tap \u201eRegister.\u201c Can't remember your password? Look for \u201eForgot Password\u201c on the login page.<\/li>
  2. Answer the question.<\/strong> The first time you open the account, it asks you what good deeds you\u2019ve done for the common good in recent weeks. Complete one of the suggested sentences or write your own. Are you a retiree? If so, check the box that says \u201eYour life\u2019s work counts.\u201c.<\/li>
  3. Save and read.<\/strong> The software immediately acknowledges your first thank-you: 100 Gradido, along with a message like the one Bob reads twice. From now on, a real person will read everything you post.<\/li><\/ol>

    Have you already answered this question? If so, you'll find your answer under \u201eTransactions\u201c: The sender is the community, and the word \u201eCreated\u201c appears above the amount.<\/p>

    Have you made a withdrawal before, long before this question came up? If so, your account won't ask you that question anymore. Your thank-you note has been listed under \u201eTransactions\u201c since then, and when you make a withdrawal, you answer the question anew every month.<\/p>
